e worried the table wouldn’t hold the vase. He hovered it above the tabletop and raised an eyebrow. I nodded. He put it down. It cracked. He took the vase off. We both hovered above the broken pieces. Looking at ourselves and the broad crack between us. ‘Unfortunate.’ I concluded. ‘You’d think the future would hold some sort of solution.’

His vein pulsed. ‘I can’t trust you.’
